The short version
- Your Slack messages, files, and sign-in token stay in your browser. We have no server that receives them.
- The extension only reads from Slack. It never posts, edits, or deletes anything.
- The extension collects no analytics or usage data.
- We don't sell your data or use it for advertising.
Who we are
In this policy, "we" means the developer of Channel Export.
Channel Export is a Chrome extension that exports Slack conversations you already have access to
(channels, direct messages, group DMs, and threads) into files on your computer.
It works with the Slack session you are already signed in to at app.slack.com.
Your Slack data
When you start an export, the extension requests messages, replies, channel details, and user profiles from Slack's API, directly from your browser to Slack. It builds the export file in your browser and saves it with Chrome's download feature.
- Message content, file contents, channel names, people's names, and workspace details are never sent to us or to any third party.
- The extension uses read-only Slack API methods. It contains no code that posts, edits, reacts to, or deletes anything in Slack.
- Exported files are saved only to your computer. We don't keep a copy.
Your Slack sign-in token
To make requests on your behalf, the extension reads your session token from the Slack page you have open. Once you open Slack in Chrome, the extension keeps the token in Chrome's session storage, which is held in memory, until you close Chrome or the extension updates. It is never written to disk, and it is only ever sent to Slack.
Analytics and payments
The extension collects no analytics, telemetry, or usage data, and it has no payment features. Apart from the requests it makes to Slack on your behalf, it makes no network requests at all.
Permissions the extension asks for
- Access to
slack.com: to add the Export button to Slack and to read the conversations you choose to export. This is the only site the extension can access. - Downloads: to save the export file to your computer.
- Storage: to track export progress and to hold your Slack session token in memory-only session storage.
- Offscreen document: to run exports in the background without opening a tab.
Chrome Web Store user data policy
On your device only, the extension handles authentication information (your Slack session token), personal communications (the messages you export), and personal information about the people in them (names). Our use of information received from Slack and Chrome adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We don't sell or transfer user data to third parties, use it for advertising, or use it to determine creditworthiness.
Children
The extension is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Not affiliated with Slack
This extension is an independent project. It is not made by, affiliated with, or endorsed by Slack Technologies, LLC. Slack is a trademark of Slack Technologies, LLC.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top. Future versions may add optional features, such as a paid full-fidelity export or anonymous usage analytics. If a change would send any new kind of data off your device, we'll update this policy first and ask for your consent in the extension.
