Questions

How do I export a Slack channel without admin access?

Slack's built-in export is only for workspace owners and admins. Channel Export works for regular members instead.

Add the extension to Chrome, open the channel at app.slack.com, and click Export in the channel header. Pick a format and date range, and the file saves to your computer.

Can I export DMs, group DMs, and private channels?

Yes. If you can open a conversation in Slack, you can export it. That includes direct messages, group DMs, private channels you're a member of, and single threads.

Export a direct message with the Export button in the conversation itself. Channels, private channels, and group DMs can also be picked from the extension popup.

How do I export Slack messages to PDF?

Choose PDF in the export dialog. PDF and HTML are part of the $7 Full export, and they include images, avatars, and custom emoji. The PDF has real, searchable text. For very long channels, HTML is the better choice.

Markdown and CSV are free for any conversation, with no limits.

Can I export messages older than 90 days?

You get the same history Slack shows you. On paid Slack plans that's usually everything. On free Slack plans, Slack only shows the last 90 days, so the extension can't reach older messages either.

I use the Slack desktop app. Will this work?

Not inside the desktop app, because browser extensions only run in a web browser. You don't have to switch for good, though.

Open app.slack.com in Chrome, sign in to the same workspace, and export from there. The desktop app keeps working as normal.

Where do my messages go?

Only to your computer. The extension asks Slack for the messages through your own browser session, builds the file in your browser, and saves it to your Downloads folder. We have no server that receives message content.

The extension sends a few anonymous usage events, like "an export finished, as Markdown". They never include messages, names, channel names, or workspace names, and you can turn them off in settings. The privacy policy lists every event.

Is this allowed?

The extension only reads conversations you can already open in Slack. It uses your normal sign-in, doesn't get around any permission, and never posts, edits, or deletes anything. It saves what you could otherwise copy by hand.

Your workspace may still have rules about keeping copies of messages, especially at work. Check your employer's or client's policy before you export, particularly for conversations that include other people.

This extension is not made by, affiliated with, or endorsed by Slack Technologies, LLC.

Is $7 a subscription?

No. It's a single payment that unlocks HTML, PDF, saved files, and exporting several conversations at once.
